Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Charleston WV
830 PM EDT Fri Jul 24 2026

.WHAT HAS CHANGED...
00Z Aviation Forecast Discussion update.

&&

.KEY MESSAGES...
- 1) Isolated to scattered showers and storms this weekend.

- 2) Potential for convective complexes to start next week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
KEY MESSAGE 1...

High pressure will provide mainly dry weather to the area. A few
passing disturbances will trigger isolated to scattered convection
Saturday and Sunday, but most areas should remain dry. At this
point, storms over the weekend are not looking to be severe.

KEY MESSAGE 2...

Focus then shifts towards early next week, in which a series of
convective disturbances look to form to our north and west and drop
southeast into our area. These could bring a damaging wind and heavy
rain threat to our region with moderate instability and increasing
shear expected, but overall, the exact details are uncertain at this
point.

&&

.AVIATION /00Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Isolated showers remain possible tonight across the area,
potentially resulting in very brief MVFR VSBY in a few
locations. Widespread VFR at present is expected to transition
to a mixture of VFR/MVFR/IFR CIGs and VFR/MVFR VSBY (with patchy
fog). Confidence in fog formation is quite low, with slightly
higher confidence in restrictions from stratus, particularly
in/near the mountains. VFR conditions return area-wide by mid to
late Saturday morning, save the potential for lingering MVFR
CIGs across the mountains. VFR then persists through the
remainder of the TAF period. A few ISOLD showers remain possible
on Saturday in/near the northern mountains.

Surface flow goes calm at most sites tonight, with light WNW
flow expected on Saturday.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE AND ALTERNATE SCENARIOS THROUGH 00Z SUNDAY...

FORECAST CONFIDENCE: Low to medium tonight, medium to high
Saturday.

ALTERNATE SCENARIOS: Very brief MVFR VSBY could occur tonight
with ISOLD showers. Restrictions later tonight into Saturday
morning with stratus and/or fog could vary from the forecast.
